20 March: In the morning, calm, cloudy sky early; after eight o'clock, sun [shine]. At seven thirty, 9°F [−12.8°C], wind north. The river was still rising. No one walked across the ice anymore. Today Kipp sent out Síh-Chidä on horseback to look for [Page 3:160] buffalo. Mándeh-Páhchu came to have himself drawn. At twelve o’clock, 24°F [−4.4°C],M21Wind [from the] North. sunshine. Mató-Tópe and Péhriska-Rúhpa came back in the afternoon. They had shot five buffalo and gave away much of the meat. Kipp received some [of it, and] we [were given] two [buffalo] tongues. Síh-Sä, with other Indians, shot a bison; he also brought meat. We received a red fox (Canis fulvus). [In the] evening [it was] calm and cold.
