In his written account, Prince Maximilian noted that the Janus, a brig of r 70 tons, was not as well furnished as he would have liked: its small berths slept only six passengers. Cape Cod, Massachusetts, was sighted at a distance of about fifteen miles on the morning of July 3. Bodmer's delicate representation of the land, seen as a line upon the distant horizon, records the artist's first impression of the North American continent.
