Grave

At the Gnadenhutten site, Maximilian had seen a gravestone inscribed with the names of settlers who lost their lives in an Indian raid in 1755. Bodmer made a study of this memorial and copied its inscription on September 10 or 11. On September 13 he injured his left hand in a hunting accident. While he recuperated from this mishap, Maximilian prepared to continue to Pittsburgh without him, noting in his journal on September r6 that "Mr. Bodmer will follow with Dr. Saynisch."
