On the morning of May 17, Maximilian and Bodmer took a stroll along the pier near Helvoet, where Bodmer made a sketch of one of the gunboats lying in the ship channel. In the afternoon the brig Janus arrived. Maximilian, Bodmer, and Dreidoppel boarded her that evening around nine o'clock, and she weighed anchor at three in the morning of May 18.

In his written account, Prince Maximilian noted that the Janus, a brig of r 70 tons, was not as well furnished as he would have liked: its small berths slept only six passengers. Bodmer's rendering of the ship's galley, made on July 3 off the coast of Massachusetts, furnishes additional evidence of the cramped quarters

Cape Cod, Massachusetts, was sighted at a distance of about fifteen miles on the morning of July 3. Bodmer's delicate representation of the land, seen as a line upon the distant horizon, records the artist's first impression of the North American continent.

Shortly before noon on May 23, the Janus passed Lizard Lighthouse off the coast of Cornwall. Bodmer later produced a finished watercolor of this famous landmark based in part upon other extant views. In the afternoon the ship passed the entrance to the harbor of Falmouth on England's southwestern coast

Prince Maximillian's party reached Helvoet on May 15, and found lodgings at Hobson's an English packet hotel. While awaiting the arrival of the American ship Janus to take them across the Atlantic, they spent two days inspecting the town and its environs. Among the ships anchored at Helvoet at this time was the frigate Adriana. Bodmer produced a small study in watercolor of this vessel on May 16.
