5 June: There were two steamboats in addition to the Mediterranean—the Waterloo and another one. At midday, eleven thirty, we reached Smithland at the mouth of the Cumberland River. [That] morning I prepared the birds shot by Mr. Bodmer.

We made the acquaintance of an American, a Mr. Scott, who was always with us. [He was] an entertaining man [who had] taken a trip to the West Indies. We took on board many passengers [from] the Metamora, who were [traveling] from New Orleans. The day was very hot and windless. The sight of the magnificent Ohio [was] beautiful and splendid. Toward evening we passed close to Cave-inRock. [We] traveled through the night, and by daybreak [on]
