25 May: In the morning, heavy fog; we had to put ashore again soon [after leaving our camp]. At seven thirty, 70°F [21.1°C]. Wind southwest. At seven thirty the fog parted, [and] we [went] past Cote Sans Dessein. At noon we reached Portland, a small town or village that was founded two years ago. A crowd of curious people gathered there. The day was very hot and [the] wind still; at noon, 88°F [31.1°C]. Between twelve and one o’clock, the steamboat Oto came toward us, traveling upriver. The mouth of the Gasconade River became visible a little farther downriver.
