5 October: Beautiful, bright weather; in the morning, somewhat foggy. Mr. Bodmer went out to sketch the source of the Ohio. A fisherman had promised to procure for us Harlan’s Menobranchus (see Cuvier, Règne animal, edit. 2 vol. 2, p. 119). At noon he returned with a large number of salamanders (Menopoma) and four proteus (Menobranchus), several of which were still alive.
