30 March: (First day of Easter.) In the morning, cloudy, fairly warm. Wind southeast. At seven thirty, 31 3/4°F [−0.1°C]. The Mandans went hunting again, as the buffalo are said to be not very far away. At ten o’clock we saw the first flock of about fifteen to twenty wild geese migrating up the Missouri. The wind rose strongly. At twelve o’clock, 50 1/2°F [10.3°C]. Wind strong out of the south. Some [of the] Mandans returned without having achieved anything; others continued to hunt. In the evening as during the day, warm and the wind severe.
