16 March: In the morning, very nice and bright, the sun friendly. At seven thirty, 30°F [−1.1°C]. Light wind out of the southeast. In the night we heard the schähä́äckäs barking around the fort. Early [today] we saw a swan that flew in a northwesterly direction. Birds that arrive now cannot stay here, because they can find no place with open water. At nine o’clock the sky clouded over; the wind [was] stronger and a little more raw out of the east, slightly toward south. Bathiste d’Iguies had gone to hunt beavers yesterday [and] hunted in Jonquá's' company. At twelve o’clock, 46 3/4°F [8.2°C] . Wind very strong and slightly raw out of the south east. Today was Sunday; therefore, as a rare exception, we had rice soup and cornbread for lunch. In the evening we got crêpes (thin pancakes with flour and fat but no eggs or milk) that are eaten with molasses; [there was] weak coffee and honey to drink. I stayed at home and did not eat. Evening very windy, not cold. During the night,[a] stormlike wind that abated about morning.
