23 January: Early in the morning, calm weather, overcast. At seven thirty, −16°F [−26.7°C]. Wind light but very cold, out of the southwest. Three engagés, together with the Arikara, rode out early to hunt buffalo. After breakfast Charbonneau traveled to Bijoux [at] the Hidatsa village to look for meat. The sled path was now very smooth. They could get as close as 20 paces to the common ravens beside the fort. At one o’clock, −1 1/2°F [−18.6°C]. Wind southeast, light. Máhchsi-Karéhde was drawn, [as was] an Arikara, a strong, very muscular man [from] the fort. A wolf ran through the prairie down along the river; Dreidoppel followed it in vain. Weather cold but pleasant. Evening clear, cold, with a little more (and colder) wind. Night clear, calm, and not very cold.
