18 February: In the morning, good clear weather, early bright sun; snow uniformly covered the whole area about 2″ deep. At seven thirty, −1°F [−18.3°C]. Wind light but very cold out of the east. Earlier the sun rose brightly. The woodcutters brought such poor firewood yesterday that we could not have a warm room at all; I was hardly able to write, [even] close to the fire. Today they went out early to the lower forest and were supposed to bring better firewood. Síh-Chidä slept at our place and was numb with cold. I gave him a small magnifying, or burning, glass in a green case, which made him very happy. Medicine Bird was in the fort early. Mr. Kipp is keeping a bag of potatoes for him to plant in May. Dreidoppel went tracking with [a] gun. At eleven o’clock the sun was already very intense; it glared on the snow. Wind [from the] southeast, always a bit cold, but otherwise the weather [was] pleasant now. The Indians brought much wood to the village. There were many of them in the fort. At noon, very pleasant weather, much warmer than in our room. At twelve o’clock, 28°F [−2.2°C]. [There were] many Indians in and near the fort. Dreidoppel saw a schähä́ckä and a prairie hen. Wind calm [from the] southwest, moderately strong. In the afternoon the wind became very strong. Evening windless, moderately cold, moonlit. After nine o’clock, 14°F [−10°C].
