Description

1 . Otter skin pouch. Decorated with quill and beadwork. Reproduced in Tableau 21 of the aquatint atlas. 2. Skin pouch. Similar to Maximilian's description of a Sioux tobacco pouch made of white skunk skin obtained from the agent at Fort Union. Reproduced in Tableau 21 of the aquatints. 3. Conquest bundle, Hidatsa. Young Mandan and Hidatsa men proudly recorded their romantic successes with bundles of twigs. Each rod or painted ring on a rod represented a conquest. The Hidatsas added one long rod to indicate a favorite sweetheart. Reproduced in Tableau 21. Virtually identical to a bundle in the Linden-Museum's Maximilian collection. 4. Leather pouch. Decorated with quillwork, quill-wrapped fringe, and blue beads. Reproduced in Tableau 21. Now in the Linden-Museum collection, attributed to the Atsinas. 5. Leather pouch. Both drawings apparently represent the same beaded pouch. One drawing is idealized, the other a more realistic depiction. In both, the pouch is upside down, with the fringed bottom shown at the top. This was corrected in Tableau 21, which reproduced the righthand version.
