Quiver, Bows, and Arrows

Description

An inscription associated with this watercolor study identifies the subject matter as "Dacota" (Sioux) weapons. A woodcut showing a group of similar arms illustrates a segment dealing with the Sioux in Travels in the Interior of North America. However, there is not sufficient detail to be certain that the pieces are identical. Maximilian is known to have collected numerous bows, arrows, and quivers not only from the Sioux, but also from the Iowas, Crows, Piegans, Mandans, and Iroquois. The numbers appearing in the study do not correspond with data in the associated manuscripts or publications.
