Unidentified Man

Description

An old label identified the subject of this unfinished study as a Mandan chief. Although the identity of this individual is unknown, his importance is indicated by his dress. Only the most distinguished men were allowed to wear horned bonnets with long trailers of eagle feathers like the one shown here. For a finished rendering of such a bonnet, see Plate 317.
