Head of a Vulture

Description

Bodmer's sketch of the head of a vulture is neither dated nor mentioned in Maximilian's journal. References to vultures are found throughout the Prince's travel account, particularly in the section devoted to the stay at New Harmony, Indiana, during the winter of 1832–33. The present study carries an inscription indicating that it was done on the Missouri. It could have been executed at any time during one of Bodmer's stopovers on the river during the summer or fall of 1833.
