A Group of Elk

Description

The night of September 20 was spent about a mile above the mouth of the Musselshell River in an area of the Missouri channel now inundated by the upper reaches of Fort Peck Reservoir. On the following morning a party from the keelboat went ashore to do some hunting. Maximilian reported sighting several wolves and ravens on this date, and also a small herd of sixteen elk, including several calves. The inscription on this study, dated simply "1833," refers to sketches of "wapiti calves ... from nature."
