Ghostly Sandstone Formation on the Upper Missouri

Description

Several views made by Bodmer on August 5 and 6 were later incorporated into one or more composite scenes in the atlas of aquatints. In his later narrative, Maximilian mentioned, "In this tract of twelve or fifteen miles, the valley of the Missouri has naked, moderately high mountains ... on which the thick strata of whitish, coarse-grained sandstone, which extends all over this country, are everywhere visible."
