Junction of the Yellowstone and the Missouri

Description

Located just above the mouth of the Yellowstone River, Fort Union was the uppermost point of steamer traffic on the Missouri at the time of Bodmer's visit. Goods destined for points beyond were transported from Fort Union upriver by keelboat or overland by pack train. Based on his 1833 studies, this view of the junction of the Yellowstone and the Missouri was executed by Bodmer in Europe following his return from North America. It appeared in reproduction as Tableau 29 in the atlas of aquatints.
