7 August: Today we received many bullfrogs, some of them very large. Mr. Bodmer sketched two of them. We also received a live young skunk, which was killed and stuffed that afternoon. Several new turtles and tree frogs increased our collection. Today it was so hot in my room that, with windows and doors open, I still recorded a temperature of 22 1/2°R [82.6°F, 28.1°C] at five thirty in the evening. I was delighted today to receive the first letter from Neuwied.
