25 May: Moderately weak wind, overcast sky. A ⟨[barn]⟩ swallow (Hirundo rustica) flies aboard. A sloop sails past. In the distance several ships. Noon observation: latitude 49°27', longitude 7°30'.M3Minutes or nautical miles are equal. In the afternoon an English battleship (probably seventy-four cannon) proudly sails northward past us and hoists its flag; we do the same. Wind rather good. Several porpoises. In the evening a Dutch brig from Havana, which had made the voyage in forty days. We converse with it.
