Unidentified Man

Description

According to the diaries, Bodmer made a drawing of a Piegan medicine man on September 3. Both of these two sketches are inscribed "Piegan medicine man," and either could be the drawing done that day. However, there is also some resemblance between these portrayals and that of Ni’ÛÎ_t’ÛÎ_hs’ÛÎ_, the Atsina medicine man in Plate 239. This is particularly true of Plates 250 and 239, where the similarity of facial paint and features is marked enough to suggest that the inscription on the former may be incorrect and that both are renderings of the same Atsina individual.
