Head of an Antelope

Description

The Yellow Stone was stranded by low water for approximately five days in the vicinity of Cedar Island. During this time, some hunting for the table was done, and again Maximilian ventured into the surrounding wilderness to collect specimens. He reported sighting a pronghorn, commonly called antelope, on May 17 and his first buffalo on May 18. Bodmer produced a watercolor illustration of the head of a pronghorn at this time. Dated May 19, the study was probably derived from a trophy of the hunt, not a living specimen.
