Omaha Men

Description

On May 3, three Omaha Indians were sighted on the riverbank near Bellevue. There were two men and a woman, all clothed in buffalo robes. The younger man carried a bow and a quiver made of animal skin, and his face was painted white about the nose and eyes. A woodcut of two Omaha men illustrates Travels in the Interior of North America. This undated watercolor is similar enough to the woodcut and to Maximilian's description to suggest that the subjects were the same.
