Bellevue Agency, Post of Major Dougherty

Description

Arriving at the Bellevue Agency on the afternoon of May 3, Maximilian described it as "quite prettily situated on a hilltop, the churchyard entirely on the summit .... Below on the water lie a few huts, on the summit the agency building, the dwelling of a blacksmith and his family, and still more buildings." Bodmer's finished watercolor of the settlement reproduced here served as the model for the aquatint listed as Vignette XXXI in the atlas later published in Europe. Today only scattered foundation stones within Bellevue's Fontenelle Forest mark the location of Dougherty's post.
