Hill Overlooking the Missouri River

Description

Below the mouth of the Platte on the morning of May 3, Bodmer made a shipboard study of the riverbank featuring a prominent hill isolated from the surrounding terrain. Maximilian identified it in his journal, saying that "its name is Iron Eye (Ishta-ma-seh in the Oto and Omaha language). A small creek with the same name descends here into the Missouri."
