Taking on Wood in Rainy Weather
Description
Bodmer's unfinished sketch of a steamer crew gathering wood documents an everyday aspect of river life during the first half of the nineteenth century. Since great quantities of wood were consumed by the steamboats of that day, wood stations were designated at regular intervals along the river, and gangs of woodcutters customarily went ahead of the river craft to collect and stack the necessary supplies.
