View of Pittsburgh

Description

With stopovers at Huntington and Ebensburg, where they stayed several days waiting for Bodmer and Saynisch to catch up with them, Maximilian and Dreidoppel reached Pittsburgh around midnight on September 26. Securing accommodations at the Exchange Hotel, they were soon joined there by Bodmer and Saynisch. The party of travelers spent ten days in and around Pittsburgh, described by Maximilian as "a rather old city of vast extent." Bodmer's sketch of Pittsburgh as seen from across the Monongahela River, which at Pittsburgh joins the Allegheny to form the Ohio, includes a view of a large covered bridge spanning the Allegheny.
