20 October:M1Temperature of 17°R [70.3°F, 21.3°C] at seven thirty in the morning. Today I took medicine to improve my condition. Mr. Thomas Say had heard that I had a letter for him and came to see us. I made the acquaintance of this interesting man, who had undertaken significant journeys to the Rocky Mountains and into the westerly countries with Major Long and is well known and highly regarded as a writer on natural history. He came to visit us twice today and sent us some of the wine produced by Mr. Rapp from grapes grown here on the Wabash. Dreidoppel went out in the afternoon and found interesting species of Unio and several blossoming plants along the Wabash. It had rained very much today; even in the forest, the ground was soft everywhere. The forest soil is black and certainly most fertile.
