18 April March: They work early on fitting the boat. The weather was now bright and nice. My foot was like yesterday. Cloudy sky early, severe storm out of the northwest. At seven thirty, 27°F [−2.8°C]. Weather windy and raw all day long. Noon, 22 1/2°F [−5.3°C]. Wind northwest, very strong. Our lives were pitiful, [as] we had nothing at all [to eat] but corn; for the sick and on Sunday for the others, [there was] a little rice. Afternoon just as unpleasant and windy as midmorning; fine snow occasionally flew around in the wind. Very few Indians visited us today. About evening, wind more northerly, strong, and moderately cold. My condition [was] the same as yesterday; [I] left neither room nor bed. In the evening, windy, cloudy, cold; night bright and windy.
