4 April: Very nice, calm, [and] bright this morning. At seven thirty, 43°F [6.1°C], no wind. The ice was black like the evening [before]; the river did not rise. At eleven o’clock the river started [to flow] but soon stopped again. A broad channel opened, clogged up, and [then] opened again. The water level was low and little noise was heard. [There were] many ducks and geese and a curlew on the ice in the afternoon. At noon, 60°F [15.6°C]. Wind south, stronger in the evening. Bodmer drew the Arikara wife of the blacksmith. Very stormy night.
