Pteh-Skah, Assiniboin Chief

Description

Pteh-Skah ( "White Buffalo Cow") was referred to by Maximilian as an Assiniboin chief with a reputation as a very dependable man. His portrait was painted in Maximilian's quarters at Fort Union over a period of two days in October, 1833. He was delighted with Maximilian's supply of snuff and received a scarf from Bodmer as a present. Pteh Skah wears a painted buffalo robe and a bear claw necklace. His hair is painted with red clay. According to Maximilian the Assiniboins often dressed their hair in this manner.
