Ponca Camp

Description

The Poncas encountered on May 11 were taken on the Yellow Stone to their people on the following day. Located near Bazile Creek, their camp consisted of eight or nine tipis, some of which are evident in the center of this watercolor sketch. In the foreground a boat from the Yellow Stone carries the three Ponca men to a sandbank where the camp inhabitants await them. Maximilian described this scene as a lively one, full of curious children and adults wrapped in furs or blankets. A more detailed rendering was reproduced as Vignette XI in the atlas of aquatints.
