Omaha Man

Description

On the return downriver in May of 1834 Maximilian's party again stopped at Cabanne's trading post, which had since been taken over by Joshua Pilcher. Several Otos, Omahas, Missouris, and Iowas had come to the post to do business that day, and Bodmer paused to sketch this Omaha man. The short-clipped hair and plain everyday robes of many of these people, commented on by Maximilian, must have presented a sharp contrast to the finery of the Indians upstream, who had posed in their best attire.
